Vegetable Garden Basics
A productive vegetable garden is decided mostly before planting starts. Site selection, timing, and crop choice set the ceiling on how well a plant can perform — no amount of attention afterward fully makes up for the wrong spot or the wrong week.
1. Sun exposure drives fruit production
Vegetables fall into two broad categories based on what part of the plant you're harvesting. Fruiting vegetables — tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers — need 6-8 hours of direct sun because producing fruit is energy-intensive: the plant needs surplus photosynthetic output beyond what it uses just to maintain its own leaves and stems. Leafy greens and root vegetables (lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets) ask less of the plant per harvested part, so they tolerate partial shade — roughly 4 hours of direct sun — reasonably well.
2. Reliable first crops, and why they're forgiving
- Tomatoes — vigorous growers that respond well to staking or caging, which lifts fruit off the ground and improves airflow around the foliage, reducing fungal disease pressure.
- Zucchini/summer squash — self-pollinating with both male and female flowers on the same plant, and highly productive once established, often more than a household can use from just one or two plants.
- Lettuce and salad greens — a "cut-and-come-again" crop: harvesting outer leaves leaves the growing point intact, so the plant keeps producing over several weeks instead of a single one-time harvest.
- Strawberries — a perennial that spreads via runners (horizontal stems that root and form new plants), so a small initial planting expands into a larger patch over a couple of seasons with minimal added effort.
3. Timing is governed by temperature, not the calendar
Cool-season crops (lettuce, peas, spinach) germinate and grow best in soil temperatures roughly 40-70°F, which is why they're planted in early spring or fall. Warm-season crops (tomatoes, peppers, squash) are frost-sensitive and stop growing productively below about 50°F, so they need to go in after the last expected frost date for your area — planting too early, into cold soil, is one of the most common causes of stunted or failed transplants.
4. Consistent watering prevents specific, predictable problems
Irregular watering causes measurable, named problems, not just "stress." In tomatoes, inconsistent moisture disrupts calcium uptake (calcium moves through the plant dissolved in water) and causes blossom end rot — a dark, sunken patch on the fruit's bottom — even when soil calcium levels are adequate. Alternating drought and sudden heavy watering also causes fruit to expand faster than its skin can stretch, leading to cracking. Deep watering two to three times a week beats a shallow daily sprinkle, because it also encourages roots to grow downward toward more stable soil moisture.
5. Soil biology matters more than fertilizer timing
Compost or aged manure worked into beds before planting builds soil structure and feeds the microbial life that makes nutrients available to roots over time — a slower, more durable process than fertilizing an already-planted crop. Fresh (non-aged) manure should be avoided at planting time, since it can burn roots with excess nitrogen and may carry pathogens that aging and composting break down.
